A new Shadow Warrior game is being teased. I'm giving it 3.5 stars. An old series seems to be coming back. Yeah, except for the bugs I encountered, they've improved the last game in all the right ways. Shadow Warrior 2 definitely is not a triple A blockbuster, but I really do commend it for such excellent movement and controls plus the combat is engaging enough to keep you playing, I think. I like the strategy of flattening enemies and smashing them with damage as they get up.Īnd when you start upgrading and mixing in special powers like a kind of force push, invisibility and spikes from the ground, it's a delicious deluge of demon decimation. I did enjoy the mess of this kind of combat though. I think sometimes it goes a little too far, but it also has that Deadpool-like charm to a lot of it.Īll the creature design is really creative though, it's awesome variety. Like, yeah, okay puns are fine but so much of this just seems so crass and juvenile and just a bit dumb. It's easy to just teleport back to base and buy more though, and you always have your swords!Ĭan we talk about the humour? Which I know Shadow Warrior is famous for, but I'm really not a fan. Playing on harder difficulties is more fun, but will cause you to run out of ammo a fairly quickly, depending on how you've set up your build. The mission design is more open now too, with plenty of side missions to keep you busy. I think it's fair to say this isn't as sophisticated or polished as something like Borderlands Bajo, but all the weapon and reload management is still great fun.Ībsolutely. And of course, to complete the kill-stuff-to-get-stuff gameplay loop, once enemies go down, loads of gear spews out for you to gather as enemies go down. It's also easy to see which enemies are immune or weak to certain weapon modifiers, like fire or toxic damage. But it's the upgrades and endless weapon modifiers that keep you fiddling with gear and mucking about in your inventory for hours on end. Plus, there's heaps of weapons, 70 apparently. Slashing demons with friends is heaps more fun, as multiple ninja dash about in a flurry of blood and bullets. They've done such a good job making it feel like a sword fighting game mixed with a shooter.Īnd they've taken the Borderlands model and applied it giving you four player co-op. There's variety in your melee weapons, including dual swords and chainsaws. We said this about the last game it's hard to get first person swordplay right, but they've nailed it. Yeah, and once again, the sword play is so good. It's intuitive and plays well with the types of enemies you face.ĩ0s shooters were all about avoiding missiles and endlessly dodging, and to me the avoidance dashing feels like an evolution of that. The movement system lets you dash endlessly, combat roll from high falls, double jump, mantle, as well as working defensive dashes into the melee combat. And you really do feel the full flight of the ninja as you leap and zip about. And it's particularly satisfying how the way these enemies fall apart, and explode around you. Though it's especially intense when you're up right in the thick of it with melee weapons!Īnd I love how the weapons just carve up enemies, like shotguns, leave huge gaping hole in enemies which is particularly satisfying. The gore is quite full on but it's cartoony enough, I think to keep it tongue and cheek. ![]() I mean it's tacky, but it's also so fluid and fast-paced that you can't help but enjoy yourself. Hacking, slashing, shooting, leaping about and cracking wise is what Wang does best. But this game is less about story and more about gory. The story takes a few turns, including fighting her huge demonic demon corpse. Yeah, it's a cool idea, to give you someone to talk to the whole time, especially as they're both pretty unhappy to be fused together. Unable to save her body from corruption, she's transferred inside the soul of Wang, and becomes a supporting character of sorts. After being captured and injected with a strange serum, her body becomes infused with some kind of demon. ![]() The story revolves around saving a scientist by the name of Kamiko. You once again play as Lo Wang, a tough talking bad-ass ninja warrior, who likes to taunt his enemies, and complain a lot. This sequel adds 4-player coop, and a whole lot more bloody fun. 2013's Shadow Warrior proved that there is a way to modernise and revitalise even the most politically incorrect shooters from the 90s.
